Deep well injection is a method of disposing of liquid waste by placing treated or untreated liquid waste into geologic formations that prevent the migration of contaminants into potential potable water aquifers. A typical injection well will extend several thousand feet down from the surface level into highly saline, permeable injection zones such as deep sandstone or limestone, remaining below an impermeable layer. Preservation of these wells is essential to maintaining a low operational cost while the well is in use. Since these wells are generally thousands of feet deep, it is critical to protect the porosity the of the injection formation zone. High concentrations of suspended solids (typically >2 ppm) can lead to plugging. Concentrations of certain minerals, such as iron, may result in fouling when conditions alter the chemical state and convert soluble to insoluble species. Organic materials may serve as an energy source for indigenous or injected bacteria, which allows for rapid population growth and fouling. These situations can significantly shorten the life of the well and in turn may cost millions of dollars to treat or replace. While there is no one filtration recommendation possible due to the wide variation of the strata in the injection zone, Graver Technologies offers a broad range of filtration products to meet the requirements.
